A man was left fighting for his life after a stabbing on the fringes of Luxembourg's National Day festivities, when a fight broke out just outside the capital's City Sounds concerts late on Tuesday. Two people were wounded and two suspects were detained, the Grand Ducal Police said, in an attack that cast a shadow over the country's largest public celebration.

The force said the violence erupted at around 22:15 on 23 June on the allée Scheffer, immediately north of the Champ du Glacis in the Limpertsberg district, where tens of thousands had gathered for the free open-air concerts staged in the capital for National Day. In a statement, police said two people had been wounded with a bladed weapon — that on the evening of 23 June, around 22:15, an incident on the allée Scheffer in Limpertsberg left two people injured by a knife.

What happened at the Glacis

According to police, a dispute between two groups escalated into a physical confrontation in which a knife was used. One man suffered life-threatening injuries to the neck — the daily L'essentiel reported he had been stabbed in the throat — while a second person sustained minor cuts. Both were treated at the scene by the CGDIS rescue service and taken to hospital. Police stressed that neither of the injured was a suspect.

By Wednesday, the seriously wounded man's condition had improved. Citing police, L'essentiel reported that he was "in a stable condition" and "no longer in danger of death." Police said two suspected attackers had been arrested. According to the newspaper Tageblatt, one of them was placed under formal arrest on the order of the public prosecutor's office and brought before an investigating judge. Investigators said the circumstances remained unclear and appealed for witnesses to come forward on the police hotline, 113. The public prosecutor's office was informed and the investigation is continuing.

A separate stabbing in Clausen — and no confirmed link

Earlier the same day, at about 05:30, police were called to the Montée de Clausen, on the eastern edge of the city centre, where a man was found with a deep stab wound to his back. Officers gave first aid until the emergency services arrived. The public prosecutor's office ordered the arrest of two men, who were brought before an investigating judge on Tuesday afternoon, according to Chronicle.lu and L'essentiel.

Despite the proximity in time, police were careful not to connect the cases. L'essentiel reported that the force was not in a position to say whether there was any link between the various incidents, with the investigations still ongoing. The two episodes are, for now, being treated separately.

A run of violence over the holiday

The two stabbings were not the only incidents to mar the celebrations. In the early hours of Tuesday, police and Chronicle.lu reported a string of muggings and assaults across the capital:

  • around 02:00, a watch was torn from a man's wrist near the rue Philippe II;
  • around 03:40, a man was cut on the leg and robbed of his phone in the municipal park, with the suspects fleeing the scene;
  • around 05:30, a man suffered a superficial neck wound from a broken bottle and was robbed of a gold chain on the rue de l'Eau; he was treated at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg and discharged the same evening.

L'essentiel noted that knife injuries had also been recorded in recent days in Esch-sur-Alzette and Pétange.

Questions over festival security

Lydie Polfer, the mayor of Luxembourg City, defended the festival's security arrangements, saying the violence had taken place outside the concert perimeter rather than among the crowd. She put attendance at around 30,000 and said there had been no significant incidents on the Glacis field itself, adding that police and the CGDIS had intervened very quickly.

"It happened outside; these were intoxicated people who got into a fight," Mayor Lydie Polfer told L'essentiel, adding that anyone carrying a knife "would not have been able to get into the concerts."

Polfer said concertgoers had been frisked and screened with metal detectors, telling Tageblatt that the assailant "would not have got in with the knife." Tageblatt reported, however, that eight people who attended that evening said they had not been checked with metal detectors, and that some had not been searched at all — accounts that sit uneasily with the mayor's assurances.

By Wednesday, the investigations into both stabbings were continuing, and police had renewed their appeal for witnesses. National Day, marked on 23 June, is Luxembourg's flagship national celebration, drawing large crowds into the capital for fireworks, parades and the City Sounds concerts — and putting the security of the country's biggest public gatherings back under scrutiny.
